Mr Prince Agyirey-Kwakye
I graduated from the University of Cape Coast, and worked as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the School of Biological Sciences, I also had the opportunity to explore the efficacy of various antimalarial products in Southern Ghana. I obtained a Master’s in Medical Microbiology from Kingston University. Under the supervision of Professor Mark Fielder, my research was based on the phenotypic presence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) from retail food outlets in the United Kingdom, in response to increasing evidence that S. aureus might be also emerging from an animal lineage. The project findings were presented at the MedVetNet conference in Malta, 2006. The work generated much interest and now has a fully funded PhD student working in collaboration with the Veterinary Laboratories Agency, looking at MRSA ST398 from farm animals.
With interest in the epidemiology of antibiotic resistance development, detection and monitoring, since joining the Department of Medical Microbiology & Infection Control (NHS Fife), I have being actively involved in the evaluation, training and implementation of standardized antimicrobial susceptibility testing. I am currently pursuing Professional Doctorate in Biomedical Science (DBMS) from the University of Portsmouth, where am looking at proteomic based detection and monitoring of antibiotic resistance biomarkers through mass spectrometry.
On joining the infection group under the leadership of Professor Stephen Gillespie, at the University of St Andrews, School of Medicine, my research focuses on the epidemiology and genomic characterisation of Staphylococcus aureus from intravenous drug users.data source: symbiosis
