Discovering New Drugs that Inhibit the Cellular Interferon Response and Viral Antagonists that Counteract its Antiviral Effects

The PhD studentship will contribute to a program of research, which aims to discover and develop new drugs that

1. interfere with the cellular IFN response and
2. inhibit the function of viral IFN antagonists from viruses such as Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) and Influenza.

These new drugs will have a range of applications in basic research, biotechnology and medical applications, for example molecules that inhibit the function of a viral IFN antagonist will act as an antiviral drug because inhibiting an IFN antagonist function will disable the ability of the virus to counteract the antiviral effects of the IFN response. In order to achieve this aim we have developed cell-based assays that provide a straightforward method to detect inhibition or activation of the IFN response.
